Chapter Eleven
âThis has been such a great day,â Hannah said as she and Elliot walked toward the Inn. âFirst, the snowballs and snow angels, then some work at the Tinker Shop and then a long lunch at the Kringle.â She rubbed her stomach. âThose eggnog waffles were delicious, especially when I added the country fried chicken strips.â
âYeah,â Elliot replied, holding her hand tightly as they continued. âCarol loved that idea, said she was going to talk to Joe about adding the combo to the menu.â
âAs well she should. The maple syrup from the Sugar Shack is amazing on both. Iâm so full now I could lie down and take a long nap.â She moaned at the thought.
âWhenâs the last time you did that?â he asked. âTook a long afternoon nap?â
She considered that question for a moment, scrunching her face with the effort. âNot since I was a little girl, I think.â
âMy mother used to say a nap, even as short as fifteen minutesâa cat nap, she used to call itâcould do a world of good.â
âI donât think thereâs fifteen minutes in my schedule to even consider such a delight. As it is, I spent most of our lunch going over ideas for the museum with you and talking about all the things from the Tinker Shop weâre going to stock in the gift shop.â She shrugged. âThat didnât even count as just a lovely lunch with my boyfriend.â
Saying that aloud made her feel some type of way. She couldnât quite put her finger on what the feeling was, but she knew she didnât like it.
âYeah, but at least we were together. I like spending time with you, Hannah. It reminds me of the old days, especially during the summer when we spent all our time together.â
They had done that, Hannah recalled. Especially those last two years she was in high school. Whatever job she was doing or activity she participated in, Elliot was never far behind. Thinking back now, that could be because heâd had a crush on her, or so heâd told her the other night, but Hannah had always just thought it was nice to have her best friend so close by.
âI want you to promise me something,â Elliot said as they came closer to the steps that would lead to Megâs front porch.
âWhatâs that?â
âPromise me that after Christmas youâll think about taking a little break. Maybe a trip or something, just to get away from Evergreen and take a breath from all your responsibilities here.â
Instinct had her thinking of exactly that: all the responsibilities she had in town. The museum would be newly open and surely sheâd be needed there. Michelle and Thomas would be away on their honeymoon, so if David was still in town, sheâd have to keep an eye on him. Meg might have a lull in business the first and second week in January, but Valentineâs Day was just around the corner, and Evergreen did a huge celebration for that holiday as well.
âOn one condition.
